Otis Residence

Otis Residence

by Lewis E. Stevens, 1935

2825 Chippewa Lane, Midland, MI

Designed by Lewis Stevens, in 1935.

Built in 1937 for Lawrence Otis, who was a chemical engineer for the  Dow Chemical Company.

An addition was designed by Robert Hammerschmidt for John and Patricia Zimmerman in 1990.

Planted into the high banks along the Chippewa River, the Otis Home, 1935 by Lewis Stevens, takes full advantage of integrating structure into the surrounding natural environment. One of two structures designed by Stevens in Midland, the home was originally two-bedrooms, but a seamless 1990 addition designed by Midland architect Robert Hammerschmidt added a master bedroom suite and garage to the design.    The intimacy of the living room is enhanced with natural light coming in from the large picture windows and the clerestory windows above.  The cantilevered deck running outside of the living and dining rooms stretches across the full length of the back of the home adding incredible livability and beautiful views of the river.  A stunning combination of beautiful Arts and Crafts and Mid-Century Modern furnishing and artwork enhance and highlight the streamline design of the home.
